Biography
Kishorilal Roy Chowdhury (1848–1925) was an eminent zamindar, visionary educationist, and dedicated philanthropist from Baliati in Manikganj, Bengal (now in Bangladesh). Born on November 19, 1848, into the illustrious Baliati Zamindar family, he dedicated his life, intellectual energy, and immense wealth to the advancement of modern education and social welfare in the region. His father, Jagannath Roy Chowdhury, was a highly respected figure whose legacy Kishorilal sought to honor through public service. Kishorilal Roy Chowdhury is most widely celebrated for establishing the historic Jagannath College in Dhaka in 1884, which he named in memory of his father. This institution, which began as a school and later evolved into a premier college, played a monumental role in spreading higher education across East Bengal during the colonial era and has now transformed into the prestigious Jagannath University. Beyond this landmark achievement, Kishorilal was instrumental in founding and supporting several other educational institutions, including the Baliati Ishwar Chandra High School in Manikganj and the Kishorilal Jubilee School in Dhaka, ensuring that quality education was accessible to students from all walks of life. His philanthropic endeavors extended far beyond education; he contributed generously to healthcare, public infrastructure, and community welfare, significantly improving the living standards of the people in Dhaka and Manikganj. His administration of the Baliati estate was marked by progressive reforms, cultural patronage, and a deep empathy for his subjects. He passed away on July 3, 1925, in Dhaka, leaving behind an enduring legacy of intellectual enlightenment, social transformation, and educational empowerment that continues to inspire generations in Bangladesh.
