Tarpan on Mahalaya

In the morning, while Amavasya lasts

On the morning of Mahalaya, tarpan is offered for one's forefathers and ancestors: sesame and water, at the ghat of a river, a pond or other water. The custom is to finish it in the morning, while the Amavasya tithi lasts.

About

Sharadiya Durga Puja is the largest religious and social festival of the Bengali Hindu community. Spanning five days from Shashthi to Vijaya Dashami, Goddess Durga is worshipped with elaborate Vedic rituals, prayers, and community celebrations. The festival concludes with the ceremonial immersion of the deity's idols on Dashami.

Religious Significance

This festival commemorates Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of righteousness and truth over evil. Beyond its spiritual importance, it holds deep emotional significance as devotees welcome the Goddess as a beloved daughter returning to her earthly family home.

Rituals & Observances

On Shashthi, the kalparambha, and in the evening the bodhon, amantran and adhivas of the Devi. On Saptami morning the Nabapatrika is bathed and brought in, and the Saptami puja follows. On Maha Ashtami, the puja and pushpanjali, Kumari Puja, and Sandhi Puja at the meeting of Ashtami and Navami. On Maha Navami, the puja and the homa.

On Bijaya Dashami, the Dashami puja and darpan bisarjan, the boron and sindoor khela, then the immersion of the idol and Bijaya greetings.
