Kantajew Temple is a magnificent ancient Hindu temple located on the banks of the Dhepa River in the Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. It is universally acclaimed for its spectacular and intricate terracotta architecture. The outer walls of the temple are entirely covered with exquisite terracotta panels that depict epic tales from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the life of Lord Krishna (Krishnalila). Originally, the temple was built in the 'Navaratna' (nine-spire) architectural style. Unfortunately, it lost all of its nine spires during the devastating earthquake of 1897 and now stands without them, though its structural foundation remains mostly intact.

About
History
The construction of the temple was initiated in 1704 CE (some sources suggest 1702) by Maharaja Pran Nath, the then Zamindar of Dinajpur. His vision was to build a grand monument dedicated to Lord Krishna and his wife Rukmini. However, the Maharaja passed away before the construction could be finished. Following his dying wish, his adopted son, Maharaja Ramnath, took over the project and successfully completed the temple in 1722 CE. Beyond its religious significance, the temple serves as a historical archive, showcasing the extraordinary craftsmanship, folk art, and cultural richness of 18th-century Bengal.
How to get there
First, you need to travel from Dhaka to Dinajpur town by bus or train. Kantajew Temple is located about 20 kilometers away from the main town. From Dinajpur, you can easily take a local bus or hire a CNG/auto-rickshaw directly to Kantanagar in Kaharole Upazila.
The ideal time to visit is during the winter season, from November to March, when the weather is pleasant. However, to experience the true cultural vibrancy, visiting during the Rash Purnima festival (typically in November) is highly recommended. During this time, a month-long traditional fair takes place around the temple, offering a vibrant display of local heritage.
