About

The Dhakeshwari Temple is not merely a structure built of bricks; it is a living symbol of a thousand years of faith, devotion, and tradition for followers of the Sanatani Hindu religion. Located in the heart of Dhaka city, this temple is recognized as the National Temple of Bangladesh. Its serene, tranquil environment and the fragrance of incense bring deep peace to the minds of the devotees.

  • Architectural Style and Structure:

    • Upon entering the main temple courtyard, one is greeted by a magnificent display of ancient architecture.

    • Outside the main temple complex lies a 'Nat Mandir' (assembly hall), where devotees gather during various pujas and festivals.

    • The temple's architecture bears the touch of the traditional Bengal style. Although much of its original form has changed over time due to evolution and various renovations, its solemnity has not diminished in the slightest.

    • To the east of the main temple, there are four small Shiva temples. These Shiva temples are situated in a single row, and their spires resemble pagodas.

  • Spiritual Atmosphere and Daily Rituals:

    • Every morning at dawn, the 'Mangal Aarti' takes place here. The surroundings resonate with the sound of conch shells and ululation.

    • Throughout the day, devotees come here to seek the Mother Goddess's darshan, to share their joys and sorrows, and to pray for blessings.

    • The temple priests conduct the daily worship with utmost devotion and discipline.

  • Social and Cultural Significance:

    • The Dhakeshwari Temple is not only a place of worship but also a major social gathering center for the Hindu community.

    • Festivals like Sharadiya Durga Puja, Janmashtami, and Saraswati Puja are celebrated here with great pomp and grandeur. During Durga Puja, in particular, hundreds of thousands of visitors flock here.

    • Various religious discussions, kirtans, and cultural programs are organized within the temple premises, serving as a beacon of community harmony.

This temple is like a living entity. Even amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, coming here feels like entering another realm, where only devotion and surrender reign supreme.

History

The history of the Dhakeshwari Temple is deeply intertwined with the name of Dhaka city itself. According to folklore and historical sources, the history of this temple spans approximately 800 years.

  • Foundation and Legends:

    • It is widely believed that King Ballal Sen of the Sen dynasty built this temple in the 12th century.

    • Legend has it that King Ballal Sen once dreamt of Goddess Durga hidden within a dense forest. Following this vision, he excavated the site, uncovered a statue of the Goddess, and built a temple there.

    • Since the Goddess's idol was found covered or 'hidden' (Dhaka) in the forest, she was named 'Dhakeshwari'. Many historians believe that the name of Dhaka city originated from this very temple.

  • Transformations Through the Ages:

    • Since its establishment, the temple has undergone renovations and reconstructions at various times. The current structure we see today is not the original edifice built by King Ballal Sen.

    • During the Mughal era and subsequently the British period, significant changes were made to the temple's architecture, blending different stylistic elements over centuries.

  • The Liberation War and the Aftermath:

    • During the glorious Liberation War of 1971, this temple suffered extensive damage. The Pakistani occupation forces destroyed large parts of the temple complex.

    • After the independence of Bangladesh, the temple was carefully renovated and restored to its former glory.

  • Recognition as the National Temple:

    • In 1996, the Government of Bangladesh officially recognized the Dhakeshwari Temple as the "National Temple" of the country. This stands as a major acknowledgment of the rights and existence of the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

    • Currently, the temple is managed jointly by the Dhaka City Corporation and a dedicated temple committee.
