About

Located in the heart of Dhaka city, just north of the Central Shaheed Minar in the 'Shibbari' area of the University of Dhaka, Sri Sri Bura Shibdham is a profoundly historic Hindu temple. Believed to be between 350 and 500 years old, this ancient shrine dates back to the Mughal era. In fact, the entire neighborhood, known as "Shibbari," derives its name from this very temple.
The temple features a striking red, tall spire (shikhara style) decorated with intricate architectural handiwork. Known for its serene and spiritual atmosphere, it remains a highly revered place of worship for devotees. While it hosts daily rituals and visitors, the temple comes alive every year during the grand celebration of Maha Shivaratri, drawing thousands of pilgrims from all over the country.

History

The history of Sri Sri Bura Shibdham spans several centuries. Historical records indicate that the original temple structure was established during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir (1605–1627 AD), making it nearly 500 years old.
The Patronage of the Maharaja of Burdwan:
In 1912, a devastating cyclone severely damaged the ancient structure. Seeing its ruined state, Sir Bijay Chand Mahtab, the Maharaja of Burdwan (West Bengal) and a member of the Governor's Executive Council of undivided Bengal, took the initiative to reconstruct the temple. An ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, the Maharaja used to stay at his royal guest house located right behind the temple—known as 'Burdwan House' (which is now the historic Bangla Academy building). During his time, even the royal family of Nepal visited this holy shrine upon invitation to offer their prayers.
The Tragedy of 1971:
During the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, the temple witnessed a dark chapter of brutality. The Pakistani occupation forces targeted this religious site, brutally massacring the chief priest (Sebait) and several saints who resided within the temple complex.
Legacy and Heritage:
The temple complex spans approximately 5,500 square feet built in the traditional 'Shikhara' style. It houses the sacred Samadhi (tomb) of Shri Monijananda, an ancient ascetic of this shrine. Another remarkable feature is a centuries-old well inside the courtyard, whose crystal-clear water is still used exclusively for daily deities' rituals and worship.

How to get there

From Shaheed Minar or Dhaka University Area:
You can take a rickshaw, CNG, or bus from any part of Dhaka to the 'Central Shaheed Minar' or 'Jagannath Hall' intersection. The temple is located right behind (north side of) the Central Shaheed Minar, inside the Shibbari residential area next to the Rupayan Tower lane.
By Metro Rail:
The most convenient way is to take the Metro Rail and get off at the 'Dhaka University' station. From the station, you can easily take a short 5-minute rickshaw ride or a brief walk via the Jagannath Hall crossing toward the Central Shaheed Minar to reach the temple complex.
