About

Siddheshwari Kali Mandir is one of the oldest, most traditional, and highly sacred Hindu temples in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Located on Siddheshwari Lane under the Ramna Police Station, this temple serves as a vital spiritual and religious hub for the Hindu community in this region. According to widespread local belief and historical accounts, the entire neighborhood of 'Siddheshwari' was named after the presiding deity of this temple, Goddess Siddheshwari Kali. Despite being situated in the heart of the busy and bustling city of Dhaka, entering the temple premises offers a serene, peaceful, and deeply spiritual atmosphere. The main sanctum of the temple houses a magnificent and revered deity of Goddess Kali, where daily worship, food offerings (bhoga), and arati are performed in accordance with traditional scriptures. Additionally, the temple complex features smaller shrines and deities of other Hindu gods and goddesses. Every year, during major festivals such as Durga Puja, Shyama Puja (Kali Puja), and Basanti Puja, grand celebrations are organized here. These festivals attract thousands of devotees, pilgrims, and visitors from Dhaka and various parts of the country. An ancient pond located within the temple premises further enhances the beauty, serenity, and historical gravity of this sacred place of worship.

History

Although no precise written documents exist regarding the exact year of establishment of the Siddheshwari Kali Mandir, it is universally recognized as one of the oldest temples in Dhaka. According to local folklore and oral history, the temple is believed to be more than 500 years old. It is conceptualized that before the Mughal era, when this entire area was covered in dense forests, spiritual ascetics and sages used to perform intense meditation and worship of Goddess Kali here to attain spiritual perfection or 'Siddhi'. Over time, the place where they attained 'Siddhi' came to be known as 'Siddheshwari'. Historical sources indicate that a functional temple existed at this site even during the 17th century. Through the passage of time, natural disasters, and political shifts, the original temple structure suffered damage repeatedly. Subsequently, the temple was reconstructed and renovated at various times through the collective efforts of the local Hindu community, devotees, and generous patrons. The modern multi-story temple structure seen today is built upon its ancient historical foundation. This temple is not merely a place of worship but stands as a unique historical monument reflecting Dhaka's ancient history, heritage, and cultural synthesis.
