About

["Located in Jainpur, the southern part of Surmar in Sylhet city, the Shri Shri Mahalakshmi Bhairavi Griba Mahapith is an important pilgrimage site for followers of Sanatana Dharma. The widely revered and renowned place is worshipped here as Mahalakshmi Bhairavi, regarded as the true Griba or Khandeshwar pitha; the primary deity is worshipped here as Mahalakshmi Bhairavi. Without explaining both the deity's form in this pitha and the common practice of Lakshmi puja, it is necessary to understand the site's suitability through the traditions of local Shakti worship.", "Although the main worship site is on the eastern side, the upper part is open — this is a special feature of the temple. The worship of the pitha's guardian Bhairavi is conducted at a separate place near the Gotatikar's Shiva Tila. The Bengali description refers to it as Sarvananda, while the English description calls it Sambhananda. Although the Jainpur deity pitha and this Shiva Tila are related religious sites, they are located separately on the map.", "Alongside daily worship, many devotees gather for the annual Mahalakshmi Bhairavi puja in Chaitra, along with Chandipath, Anjali, Kirtan, and Mahaprasad offerings. The Sharadiya Durga puja is also performed here. News has been reported that Kumari puja will be conducted twice here during Mahashtami in October 2026."]

History

The exact year of the site's original establishment is not definitively determined. In a report on the heritage of Basse, the relationship between the worship and maintenance tradition and Devi Prasad Dash and his family is described. Local folklore recounts the revelation of a sacred stone during road construction, the initiation of the goddess's worship through a dream revelation, and the practice of leaving the upper part open. These are descriptions of religious tradition; they are not accepted as an accurate chronology of proven events. The same source also mentions the association of the nearby Bhairav Shivtilar with the temple-affiliated ascetic Brahmanandgiri and Birajanath Niyabagish. After the partition, the local management committee continued the worship and maintenance, according to statements from the relevant parties. As a record of modern activities, the published program of the 2026 annual worship lists the worship, religious assembly, cultural events, and kirtan scheduled from 25–28 March. These are specific arrangements for that year; dates for subsequent years must be confirmed separately.

How to get there

The main shrine is located in Jaintiapur, South Surma, south of the city of Sylhet; the 2026 Puja notice mentions Ward No. 30 of Sylhet City Corporation. Follow the map of the main Mahalakshmi temple in Jaintiapur. The nearby Gotatikor's Bhairav Shivtilla is a separate destination; do not mix the pin codes of the two places.
