About

Located on the banks of the Titas River in the Medda area of Brahmanbaria town, Sri Sri Kal Bhairab Temple is one of the most prominent and historic Shaivite pilgrimage sites in Bangladesh. The temple is renowned for its colossal 24-to-28-foot statue of Lord Kal Bhairab (a manifestation of Lord Shiva), flanked by Goddess Kali on the right and Goddess Parvati on the left. The complex also houses the ancient Kailasheshwar Shiva Linga, a Natmandir, and historic twin spires (Jora Math).

History

Nearly two hundred years ago, dream-inspired sculptor Durgacharan Acharjee initiated the worship of Kal Bhairab under a Panchavati tree on the banks of the Titas River in Medda, on land donated by Sarail landlord Noor Muhammad. The grand statue and temple structure were constructed in 1905. During the 1971 Liberation War, Pakistani forces severely damaged the statue with dynamite. Following independence, the colossal statue was reconstructed over four years through the efforts of Dr. Mahanambrata Brahmachari and local devotees.
