About

Located at Kayetpara (Rathkhola) in Dhamrai Municipality near Dhaka, Sri Sri Yashomadhab Temple is one of the oldest and most celebrated Vaishnavite pilgrimage centers in Bangladesh. The temple is the seat of the four-hundred-year-old historic Dhamrai Rathayatra festival. Every year on Ashadhi Shukla Dwitiya, hundreds of thousands of devotees gather to pull the grand three-tiered wooden chariot carrying the deity Sri Sri Yashomadhab from the main temple in Kayetpara to the 'Masir Bari' temple in Jatrabari, returning nine days later during Ulto Rath.

History

According to historical tradition, King Yashopal recovered the sacred Madhab (Vishnu) deity from an earthen mound near Dhamrai and entrusted Pandit Ramjiban Ray Maulik with its installation, naming the deity 'Sri Sri Yashomadhab'. Official Dhamrai Upazila records state that the formal Rathayatra festival began in 1079 Bangabda (1672 CE). Later patronized by the Baliati Zamindars and philanthropist Ranada Prasad Shaha in 1943, the colossal historic chariot was burned down by the Pakistan Army during the 1971 Liberation War. In 2010, a new 40-foot ornate chariot modeled after the original was constructed with support from the Government of India.
