About

Located about two kilometers south-east of Cumilla town in Jagannathpur Union, the Sateroratna Mandir (Comilla Jagannath Temple) is one of the oldest and most architecturally unique temples in Bangladesh. Built in an octagonal layout with classical Bengal terracotta brickwork, it represents the rare 'Satero-ratna' (seventeen-pinnacle) style, featuring eight turrets on the second tier, eight on the third tier, and a central crowning spire. Protected by the Department of Archaeology, the temple is adorned with intricate floral, foliate, bell, and geometric terracotta motifs.

History

According to historian Kailash Chandra Singha and chronicles of Tripura, Maharaja Ratna Manikya II (1685–1712 CE) initiated the construction of the temple, which was later completed by Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya in 1761 CE. The royal chronicles 'Rajmala' and 'Krishnamala' record that the Maharaja installed the deities of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra in this seventeen-jewel shrine. Today, the monument is preserved by the Department of Archaeology of Bangladesh, with regular worship continuing at the temple complex.
